Now Knowing
March 23 - May 5, 2012
Opening Night: Friday, March 23, 2012, 5 - 9 pm
Cara and Cabezas Contemporary and guest curator, CJ Schrat are pleased to present the exhibition Now Knowing from March 23 through May 5, 2012.
Now Knowing features artworks that address early sexuality and the discovery of sexual orientation. The theme was inspired by the Heartland Men’s Chorus‘ upcoming production, When I Knew, a performative exploration of the coming out process. When I Knew, narrated by Dan Savage, opens at the Folly Theater on Saturday, March 24.
The majority of the featured artists of Now Knowing identify with LGBTQQA* and in response to the exhibition’s invitation, some of the artists have made new works that reference specific coming of age stories. With the inclusion of works on paper, sculpture, and performance, the exhibition will offer a platform for the audience to map and examine their own personal experiences.
Now Knowing features work by Ashley Anders, Elizabeth Berkshire, Claire Bryant, Sergi Calavia, Ruben Castillo, Malynda Eshleman, Mauricia Gandara, Shea Gordon Festoff, Corey Hinesley, Peregrine Honig, Molly Kaderka, Linda Lighton, Kate Lindholm-Sage, KC Crow-Maddux, Geri Montano, Ryan Pechnick, Samantha Persons, Pernilla Persson, Job Piston, CJ Schrat, Amanda N. Simons, Lauren Stookey, and Parker Tilghman.
Accompanying artworks include select pieces by Kimberly Austin, Nick Cave, Jasper Johns, Roxy Paine, and John Waters courtesy of Sean Kelley, Founder and Director of City Arts Project and Co-Founder of Grand Arts, as well as a banner made of David Wojnarowicz' Untitled (One Day this Kid) courtesy of the The Estate of David Wojnarowicz and P.P.O.W Gallery, New York.
Also on view will be It Gets Better: CCA, the California College of the Arts submission to the It Gets Better Project, a national LGBTQQA* youth suicide-prevention campaign initiated by Dan Savage, author and columnist.
